Employment Impacts of Investments in Sustainable Energy
A Review of Case Studies of the Employment Impacts of Investment in Sustainable Energy
(funded by the European Commission.)
ACE took part in an UK national project report as part of the Awareness Campaign for Green Job Creation in the EU. The awareness campaign was coordinated by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). ACE undertook the work together with Friends of the Earth, UNISON and GMB Research.
The aim of the project was to increase awareness of the potential for economic activities that simultaneously protect the environment and create jobs, by presenting evidence from member countries. The UK study examined individual components of the economy- agriculture, product manufacturing and servicing, energy, transport and water.
Each of these sections narrates a number of case studies where qualitative issues such as the types of jobs created and the suitability of those jobs for the local area are discussed as well as estimates of the net gains in employment. ACE contributed to the section on energy. The report, entitled “Green Job Creation in the UK”, takes the view that environmental and employment policies should promote sustainable and lasting development which provides for well-being, respects the environment and social cohesion.
